Riding the Waves of Uncertainty: A Surfer's Journey to Inner Peace and Acceptance

Jun 10, 2023

This is a section from the Book Unthinkable - Life Teachings From a Soul Surfer:

We live in an illusion that we are in control. We crave predictability

, but life isn’t like that. We get so caught up in trying to put

all the pieces into place to feel peace when peace is something

we can access any time. I wonder if life, through wipeouts, is

showing us a pathway to peace. I believe that life is happening

for us—always—even in the most challenging of times. And the

more I focus on life through the lens of appreciation and curiosity,

the more balanced and harmonious I feel. When I focus

through the lens of worry, suspicion, or doubt, I feel constricted

and disconnected.

I see reality as a two-sided coin. We can do our part in co-creating

the life we desire by connecting to what excites us the most

and creating a vision that aligns with those desires. And on the

flip side, the reality is, we don’t always truly know what life has

in store for us. Don’t fight against it; surrender to it.

Surrendering to the bigger picture is to remember we are

part of the whole—we are all drops in the ocean.

  1. Illusion of Control: The misconception that we can control life, while in reality, life is unpredictable.

  2. Inner Peace: Peace is an internal state accessible at any time, not a result of external arrangement.

  3. Life as a Teacher: Life's challenges, including failures, are opportunities for growth and learning.

  4. Perception: Positive viewpoints lead to balance and harmony, whereas negative ones cause disconnection and stress.

  5. Co-Creation and Surrender: We can shape our lives but also need to accept life's unpredictability.

  6. Interconnectedness: Understanding our part in the larger whole can lead to a sense of peace and harmony.

  1. Control and Surrender: Reflect on a situation where you were reminded of the illusion of control. How did you react, and what did it teach you about surrendering and finding peace in unpredictability?

  2. Perception and Emotion: Write about a time you shifted your perspective from worry or doubt to appreciation and curiosity. How did this change impact your feelings of connection or disconnection?

  3. Co-creation and Acceptance: Think about your desires and the vision for your life. How are you co-creating your reality, and how can you balance this with the acceptance of life's unknowns? How does the metaphor of being a 'drop in the ocean' resonate with you?

Richard Kimber, Creative Director, Ultra Runner, Musician, and family man, says that when he approached this trail race, he ventured into a scale he has never played before. He had to treat it with a lot of respect. He says that you can't assume you're going to be successful before you've tried. You have to hope that you'll be successful and be confident that you'll be successful and back yourself, because in life, generally, nobody else is necessarily going to back you, even if they say they do. When you come to take on the challenge, whatever it might be unless you backed yourself. You are on your own. He says that believing in yourself from the beginning to the end is fundamental. When you believe in yourself, other people are likely to believe in you. At the same time, you have to be humble. Their belief in themselves has to be based on some kind of rational evidence that you can put together. It can't all be some spiritual hope.

There are many things that you need in order to thrive. The most important are the social, emotional, and physical environment. You need to feel loved and supported by those around you, have a sense of purpose, and be physically healthy. If any of these things are missing, it will be difficult for you to reach your full potential. Take some time to assess your current situation and see if there are any areas that need improvement. Work on creating an environment that supports your growth and allows you to thrive. Remember, it takes effort from both sides!
