Unexpected Inspiration: A Taxi Ride, A Survival Story, and the Unthinkable Journey

We never know what people and stories will touch us on our journey. Most often, it is the unexpected places where we find inspiration and stories that move us. My friend, Andrew Funk, a Social Impact Activist for Homeless People and International Keynote Speaker, offered me to spread a few copies of Unthinkable - Life Teachings From a Soul Surfer with influential Leaders and inspiring people. He took a copy of the book on his trip to Brussels today. During the meetings with politicians and leaders, he kept asking himself who would be the right person to gift the Unthinkable book to.  After wrapping up his meetings in Brussels, Andrew hailed a taxi back to the airport. As they navigated the city streets, the taxi driver shared his harrowing story of survival, of how he lived through the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. The taxi driver mentioned that he was an author himself. Upon hearing this, Andrew asked him if he enjoyed reading books, to which the driver responded with an affirmative 'yes'. Moved by his story, Andrew gifted him a copy of the Unthinkable Book, a small gesture of immense significance.

Life has a way of bringing us together, often in the most unexpected of places. We traverse through our journeys, sometimes oblivious of the lives that intersect ours, each with their tales of resilience, dreams, and inspirations. When we travel on our journey with an open mind and open heart,  it is in these unplanned encounters that we often find stories that deeply touch us, inspire us, and move us in profound ways. The stories we hear, and the people we meet, remind us of our shared human experience and our capacity for resilience and hope. In our journey to do the unthinkable, we are reminded that it is in these unlikely places we often find the most compelling stories of all.

REFLECTIONS

  1. Reflecting on your own journey, can you recall an unexpected encounter that deeply moved or inspired you? How did it change your perspective or approach to life?

  2. As you traverse through your own life, how do you remain open to the tales of resilience, dreams, and inspirations that intersect your path?

  3. In what ways have the stories you've heard or the people you've met along your journey reminded you of our shared human experience and our capacity for resilience and hope?

BACK YOURSELF

Richard Kimber, Creative Director, Ultra Runner, Musician, and family man, says that when he approached this trail race, he ventured into a scale he has never played before. He had to treat it with a lot of respect. He says that you can't assume you're going to be successful before you've tried. You have to hope that you'll be successful and be confident that you'll be successful and back yourself, because in life, generally, nobody else is necessarily going to back you, even if they say they do. When you come to take on the challenge, whatever it might be unless you backed yourself. You are on your own. He says that believing in yourself from the beginning to the end is fundamental. When you believe in yourself, other people are likely to believe in you. At the same time, you have to be humble. Their belief in themselves has to be based on some kind of rational evidence that you can put together. It can't all be some spiritual hope.

YOUR CONDITIONS TO THRIVE

There are many things that you need in order to thrive. The most important are the social, emotional, and physical environment. You need to feel loved and supported by those around you, have a sense of purpose, and be physically healthy. If any of these things are missing, it will be difficult for you to reach your full potential. Take some time to assess your current situation and see if there are any areas that need improvement. Work on creating an environment that supports your growth and allows you to thrive. Remember, it takes effort from both sides!
